Thank you, this is great lesson made simple. I am trying to follow the sequence of notes you were playing with both hands, but couldn't make out. Can you advice on getting that pattern under the fingers ? thanks much in advance.
Thanks for another "piano meditation" video! I love this "series" and hope you do more from time to time. They really help me relax at the keyboard and connect to my creative side. I feel like I'm able to develop my technique as well. This type of improv practice works at so many levels. Speaking of levels, I enjoyed the variety of techniques you presented here. You make a good point in that you don't need to have super complex stuff going on in order to enjoy a satisfying musical experience. As for me, the big challenge is to not getting ahead of myself. I'm still in my first year of playing after a long absence, so while my mind and heart want to zoom across the keys to play melodies I hear in my soul, my fingers just can't keep up. So, there is always this tension between what I want to do and what I actually CAN do. Showing how simplicity can be an end to itself is a great antidote to this predicament. I can enjoy being right where I am, then gradually, over time and consistent practice, naturally evolve and grow in complexity and sophistication.
I liked the reference to " Don't Cry for me Argentina "" I for sure heard it..... I started taking piano lessons when I was about 6... surprized that my teacher never taugh me how to play prelude in c major..... i'm 74 now..
Thank you so much Tom. Much love from Miami Florida.
Thank you for your professionalism and generosity❤
great content..excellently done. love this school
Any autistic keyboard students out there? I think we learn a bit differently. This lesson is excellent!
Man, thank you! This is fantastic. I do not read music and am self taught, but i come here occasionally when my playing gets stale and repetitive. You’re approach to the instrument is really refreshing. Thank you, got me out of a musical rut 👍
I am totally blind have a post secondary education in music and I still found this very useful. Because I play on a church worship team and there is a lot of just playing on the moment as the holy spirit moves.
That is so impressive! I often wonder what was going on with David as he praised God on his harp - I think he was far beyond improv and into true heavenly worship.
This young man is very much down to earth. The Best Advice ever. We all tend to make things difficult, with rules, and regulations. This tends to take the pleasure of learning music out of the picture. (Open your hearts and Minds.)
That third one was gorgeous! Going to have to try that. Once again, Tom, thank you!
I love improvisation. I jam therefore i am. Musicality and artistic sensitivity enables us to express the language, imo.
"Many come to teach but only a few can transfer knowledge" Brilliant! Thank you very much.
Glad you spoke about the importance of creative expression. Great ideas btw!🌟
Yep, so many piano students, like me, are stuck reading the page. I'm working my way away from that. It's fun moving around the chords. Thank you for this video🎉
Same! I also struggle with letting go of reading notes from the printed page. This video is so helpful.
Hope you don’t mind a piano curious guitarist offering unsolicited suggestions? One of the most fascinating improv practice routines I enjoy is to play a chord progression or focus on a new spicy chord on loop and simply hum/sing syllables over it. So much fun and a fantastic method for forging that connection between what you can hear in your head and your fingertips. Hope it’s some use to you.
@@Mike-rw2nh that's a great tip Mike. What progressions do you like to practice?
@@Mike-rw2nh I love your comment - thank you !
@@contemporaryschoolofpiano I have to confess, I cribbed this idea wholesale from Aimee Nolté Piano some time back. Over time it has seeped into my improv. As for specific chord progressions, I initially focused on anything that follows the circle of 5ths. ‘Hey Joe’ for example, and fleshed out simple triads with a very intuitive approach to singing/ humming. Recently I’ve taken to experimenting with triad pairs, whereby, I play one triad harmonically and sing arpeggios from the other over the top. Thanks for the content by the way. 👍

Your videos are so inspiring and show me stuff I wanted to learn decades ago. I've always missed the ability to play pop songs cause almost all of my teachers taught classical style & sheet music arrangements tend to be underwhelming and not fun. Although a lot of this is beyond my current ability and looks a bit daunting, it gives me ideas on how to make practice more interesting :)
I thought I was doing something wrong that when I tried to learn my favorite popular songs from sheet music, 99% of the time they don't sound or feel right. This video confirmed that I wasn't just out of my mind. I can figure out chords but not the rhythm so what you said about groove is so helpful.
I found this video yesterday and watched most of it. In the end i had to pause as it was very rich in detail and i needed to thik about what had already been said. I'm new on piano, not brand new, i know the major chords. I couldn't stop thinking about the things you were saying. Then today i played the video again this time i'm paused at at the lesson which teaches grooves. I learned Let It Be and played it pretty well and then you moved on to grooves. I was so blown away by the sound i knew something special was trying to get to me. It sounded so beautiful but i still needed some hours to meditate on everything you have said. By the way those Dylan chords are just beautiful too. As a Dylan fan that was another gift and i can't wait to learn those soon. But i'm on Let It Be and just about to try that grooving. I don't know why, but as i'm typing this my eyes are watering. Because you're giving such a fantastic gift to the world for free. I watched a lot of piano lessons on youtube and i'm so grateful for them all to be honest but with you i just know you are somebody i should join and become your student. I never thought i'd sign up with any online teachers but i know i'm in the right place my friend, and i want everything you are willing to teach me. So expect to be hearing from me in the next few days and after i've fully digested everything in this video. I only know one other thing and that's Paris Blues by T-Bone Walker. I'm playing it in A with my left hand and using my right hand to play some keys in the scale. I'm not very good yet but it's there and i think i'm going to be good at it eventually. I love the blues so much. This is God's stuff mate. Thank you so much.
I'ts a social instrument! I love it😍
May I ask what piano you are using? New subscriber.. Self-taught. You are a skilled teacher. Thank you.
Hallelujah me from 🇳🇵 🇳🇵 Nepal
Terrific.
This is so helpful, thank you!❤
Fabulous insight to a fabulous piece of music - Thank you!
Fantastic mate so inspirational 😊
I m 64,and how can I go about this beautiful way of playing chords.
By far the best education in piano I’ve come across! I won’t be searching any more!
Thanks. You are wonderful ❤❤❤❤
Thank you for the knowledge. I have a question, does the way you play chords in the right hand (without putting melody notes on top), can be used as piano accompaniment for singers?
Your lessons are like master classes of music, piano. Your teaching style is straightforward. Fantastic!
❤ thanks for making this tutorial ❤ . Let me subscribe for more,i enjoyed watching this tutorial ❤❤❤
Where are the lead sheets? I can’t find them on the website. 😢

@Tom Donald - You are such an inspiration and an amazing teacher!
This was great Tim. Nicely demonstrated (and awesome playing). Your comment about what the Beatles might have been without George Martin is spot on. He was such a tasteful genius. The brilliant but fairly sparse orchestration on songs like Penny Lane, For No One etc. take them to another level. It sends shivers down my spine listening to it all. <sigh> 😊
No, it's not exactly the same thing. That's because you, Tom, are playing those chords😊. How do I know that? The first time I heard one of your first few beginners video, only playing C on the left, and Cmaj triad on the right - slowly, I knew just how powerful and gifted you are...(but I get your point!😊)
Another great video thanks so much Tom
Dear Tom Donald, watching your Videos, I'm torn between heading over to the piano trying to do what you teach us and keep sitting in Front of the screen watching your fingers fly. I'd really like to try out your free ressources Pack, but I wonder why you need a Phone number to send it to my E-Mail adress. Anyhow, I love what you do.❤
Try both approaches? Regarding our website you can just write Non Applicable or 0 in the phone number field. We only ring students who have enrolled in our in studio lessons or have requested specific help.
Fabuloso - great lessons …thanks a bunch
What would be the best method of learning these chords by ear? I know all my chords and scales but I need to be able to Hear the chords better.
I am watching and rewatching all your videos! I love your positive view!
Hi, Just watched the video(beginnerish player), but am a bit confused as I thought you were going to teach us note by note how to play it, but you just seem to gloss over the broken chords etc without breaking it down slower, so it can be absorbed. Do you do another video for this where you break it down slowly please?
Hi Gaskellr44. Thanks for your comment. Yes, piano is a difficult instrument but let me share a few very powerful tips that will really help your musical journey. You really want to start looking at chords. Chords are the foundation of all piano music you will ever play. Without the knowledge of chords, you will be playing notes "one by one" as you said in your comment. That is the approach you want to avoid like anything! If you are a beginner, I would suggest studying our videos on chords, as many of them as you can, and then returning to this tutorial and it will all make much more sense. The last thing you want to do is play this piece "note by note" as it will sound unmusical, and lose you lots of valuable time in your learning process. Think of it as speech, we want to speak in sentences, not just individual nonconnected words. Best of luck with it, and if you need any more help you can ask us more questions via www.contemporaryschoolofpiano.com we have decades of experience in coaching beginners. You might also benefit from a cheat sheet we have of this piece where the broken chords are notated into notes - this would help you more than a RUclips video would as you see the note shapes on the page in front of you. This is a good way for a beginner to learn this piece. Just reach out to us and we can get that information over to you.
@@contemporaryschoolofpiano Thanks very much for your reply. The last few months I have been working on Fur Elise, as it's one of my fave pieces, and it took a while till I got to be able to play the first two parts pretty good now, i.e, with fairly good flow from Right hand play, and then with left hand broken chords, and I learnt that from watching a note by note video, and then worked on getting it rightish myself, but I will check out your vids on chords, as you say, it will help improve my fluidity and musicality, which I def need to work on(I take it you have them here on YT?) Yes I am starting late as a late 50s person, and tried a good few years ago, but gave up, funnily enough as I didn't think I would be able to cope with chords, but my interest came back a year or so ago, so I will persevere, especially as I can see what difference the practice has done with regard to me playing the said Beethoven piece. I think I am way off the 3rd and 4th sections of it though.
Thank you for another inspiring video.
so brilliant, I want someone can explain & show this style, could you please show us how do fill in especially in very slow song thank you so much ❤
Check out our video on Decorating Chords!
Too fast, why the rushed tempo?
Each to their own. I like energy, and I prefer playing other songs as ballads. Here there and everywhere, makes a very lush piano ballad.
Great video
I don't know how many times I write on this video, listening to Tom's playing helps cure my blues and inspire me at the same time. My dream is to play like him in the future, seriously. Also my dream, perhaps, if I may, have him and his trio to play on my wedding 😊❤
Thanks for your kindness.
Superb Tom !
Why did you choose that chord progression for the F mixolydian mode?
Wow that was brilliant… even that simple wandering away trick when doing the Chopin exercise! Thank you. That was so much fun. My dream is to learn how to improvise like Dudley Moore would on the piano, I’m thinking Beyond the Fringe. (I’m a classical pianist who’s been exploring!)
